QE Tech Radar

What is a Tech Radar?

A Tech Radar is a tool for tracking technologies, practices, or tools within an organisation.

Each item is placed on the radar with a ring assignment that reflects its current level of adoption or recommendation.

The rings represent:

  • Adopt — Technologies with high confidence to serve their purpose, proven to work reliably at scale. They carry low risk and are recommended for widespread use.
  • Trial — Technologies that have shown success in solving real problems through initial project use. Early experience confirms their benefits while also revealing potential limitations. They carry some risk, but lessons learned can be shared across teams.
  • Assess — Technologies that appear promising and show potential value. These are worth exploring through research and prototyping to evaluate their impact. They carry higher risk as they are often new and unproven, though some engineers or teams may already be experimenting with them.
  • Hold — Technologies that are not recommended for new projects. They are not considered worth further investment at this time, though they may continue to be used in existing projects where already adopted.

What is the purpose?

A Tech Radar is a tool designed to help engineering teams choose the most suitable technologies for new projects.

It provides a platform to share knowledge and experiences, reflect on technology decisions and continuously evolve the technology landscape.

The Tech Radar highlights changes and trends in software development that are worth paying attention to and considering for use in projects.

How do we maintain it?

The Tech Radar is maintained by the QE team, who guide discussions about testing related technologies across engineering.

This Tech Radar is based on the original concept by Zalando, adapted to focus on our quality engineering context.
